.Event Overview

General Information:

Scouters are to ensure their youth are properly instructed prior to the Derby Day.  Any Scout not dressed appropriately or prepared for the day will not be allowed to participate.

Scout Patrols are to be independent and self-sufficient during the Klondike Derby.  Scouters shadow their Patrol for safety purposes only.  Please no helping, problem solving, coaching, etc.

Scouters should incorporate Klondike Derby prep. activities in their upcoming program agenda to ensure the Scouts have ample opportunity to prepare (ie. how to dress; build a sled & a hobo stove, what to bring for lunch, practice basic knots and first aid techniques, what to bring for the banquet, etc).

Sled Categories:

At registration, each youth’s year of birth must be provided. The senior and junior sled designation will be done on the basis of the average of the birth years.  Half of the sleds in the Derby will be placed in the junior category and half in the senior category based on the sled's average age.  If there are multiple sleds at the median, they will be randomly and evenly distributed to junior and senior categories.

Scoring:

Game scoring for all activities is based on a 10-point scale as follows:

  • Teamwork = maximum 3 points

  • Results = maximum 3 points

  • Knowledge = maximum 3 points

  • Bonus = 1 point to be awarded for patrol spirit or extra effort

Sled scoring is based on the following criteria (12 points in total):

  • Proper equipment

  • Neatly & securly packed

  • Innovative design

  • Sled team dressed properly for the conditions

Patrol Readiness Inspection:

After registration, each Patrol will have their sled and gear inspected before the Opening Ceremony.  They will be assessed for: proper winter dress, having the required personal gear & equipment, and their sled’s innovative design & secure packing.

Leader Lunch:

2nd Russell scouting group will provide a leader lunch.

Soup Kitchen:

There will be two soup kitchen stations, one in both event areas. There will be no designated soup kitchen slots in the schedule. Instead all youth should bring a thermos to fill or refill as required. Soup kitchens will have soup and hot chocolate available throughout the planned activities.

Activity Station Leaders:

Volunteers will be required and responsible for the planning, organizing, and running of an activity.  Each activity is to be supervised by 2 screened adults for ratio and breaks.

Outline of Activities:

The Arctic Trail Begins!  There will be  8 challenging activities (4 in the am; followed by lunch; then 4 more, followed by an “all-Patrol” Sled Race in the pm).   Four activities will take place in the fairgrounds with another four activities in the neighbouring Tweed Conservation area

Each activity is 30 minutes long plus a 5 minutes for explanation and an extra 5 minutes for travel time.

a map outlining where registration will take place, the two soup kitchens, bathroom locations, first aid location activity station locations and banquet location will be provided in advance of the activity.

Please Note:  Each activity may need to accommodate up to 3 patrols
